Cold-pressed lime essential oil is one of the most phototoxic citrus oils available and should never be applied to skin that will be exposed to sunlight within 12 hours. When applied to sun-exposed skin, it can cause significant skin darkening or burning. Steam-distilled lime carries significantly lower phototoxicity risk and is generally considered safe for topical use before sun exposure.
